A big REMINDER that this year’s inter-school matches start on the 30th April – so please ensure you have teams entered by Wednesday 28th April. Simply ring Alan Goldsmith or message him on 0401 672 481.
And .. The City of Adelaide Junior Championships took place from the 14th-16th April 2021, a week earlier than normal, but still attracting a good crowd of around 80 juniors.
There were 6 tournaments held:
The main event, the Under 21 Championship, was played with a time limit of 60 mins + 10 sec increment per player and took place over 3 days. It attracted a dozen players and needed in a tie for first between Alistair Maria and Ethan Retnaraja – they will share the title. Third was Raad Rahman.
This event was an 8 round swiss with each player having 25 minutes + 10 sec on the clock and was run over 2 days. The winner, without losing a game was Athena-Malar Retnaraja, ahead of in 2nd place Yutian You and 3rd Callum Dundas.
This was a 7-round Allegro with the players having 15 minutes each on the clock It was also won by Athena-Malar ahead of in 2nd place Anthony Commisso and third Callum Dundas.
This event attracted 22 players and saw 12 games played over 3 days, with a time limit of 25 minutes + 10 sec increment per player. It was won very convincingly by Jackson Chen, ahead of 2nd Jayden Yue and third was Sophie Cerny.
The first of the one-day Allegros for the Under 10s had 7 rounds and was won by Manav Karthikeyan ahead of Oliver Cirami in second place. Equal third were Luke Pang, Lucas Chen and Jeremy Xu.
The second of the Under 10s Allegro had 8 rounds and was won Oliver Cirami, ahead of in 2nd place Manav Karthikeyan and third Lucas Chen
The third of the Under 10s Allegro had 9 rounds and ended in a tie for first between Manav Karthikeyan and Connor Caruso with Oliver Cirami third.
The overall winner for the City of Adelaide Under 10 was Manav with 22 points, 2nd Oliver 20 and 3rd Lucas 16.5
And congratulations to all who took part – the atmosphere was great, the games very good and it was all a lot of fun..

The last Thursday and Friday of the school holidays
Thursday Oct 12th – Friday Oct 13th 2017
Played at the Chess Centre, 10 Ranelagh St Adelaide 5000
The SAJCL is offering juniors the choice of 3(!) tournaments these holidays – The October 60 Tournament is for older juniors and is played at a time rate of 60 minutes +10 secs per move (only 5 rounds – 2 on Thursday and 3 on Friday) or the October 25 Tournament where the games are shorter – only 25 minutes each + 10 secs per move (9 games, 4 on Thursday, 5 on Friday). The State Under 11 – 9 Championships will all be played at 25 minutes + 10 sec/move.
The players’ ages are those on the 1st July 2017. If they are 8 or younger on 1st of July, they should play in the Under 9; if they are 9, they should play in the Under 10 and if they are 10, they should play in the Under 11 State Championships. Players who are 11 or older should play in either the October 60 minute +10 spm tournament starting or the October 25 minute +10 spm event.
The Chess Centre will be open from 8.30am on all days to allow parents to drop off youngsters before work. The sessions will all be finished by 3.30 pm, except the October 60 on the Friday may go to 4.15pm.
4 games on Thursday, 5 games on Friday:
Thursday: 10am, 11.15am, 1pm & 2pm; Friday: 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2pm.
The October 60 Tournament times will be: Thursday 10am and 1pm and Friday 9am, 11.30am and 1.45pm.
Lunches will be from 12.30pm and Pizza can be ordered each day for $5
Special one-day tournaments will be organised for those who can play for just one day.
Prizes:
1st in U11, U10 & U9 – $50, 2nd: $25; 3rd $15. The Prizes for the October Tournaments will be decided on entries but as always, will be generous.
Entry Fee – $35 which covers both days but a $5 discount applies if you send an email to Alan Goldsmith or ring or text Alan Goldsmith on 0401 67 2481 before Wednesday 11th October 2017. You can enter on the day but must do so at 9am. The Entry for a one-day event is $15.
These events were held on 27th August 2017 at PAC and were organised by Eddie and Denny Han on behalf of the SA Cancer Council and all funds raised were donated for Cancer Research.
A big thank you to Eddie and Denny for all their work and PAC for providing the wonderful venue. And of course all the great helpers and parents who assisted on the day.
There were 3 tournaments – an Under 19, Under 12 and a Novice Tournament and all were played using chess clocks with 10 minutes per player per game.

These are among South Australiaʼs most prestigious junior events. They are a brilliant way to improve at chess. The players use clocks and are encouraged to record their moves. Some very good prizes. The players’ ages are those at the 1st of July.
The Chess Centre will be open from 8.00am on all days to allow parents to drop off youngsters before work.
We want to have 7 games in the U18 & U16 Championships and so will have 3 games on the Wednesday and then 2 games for the Thursday and the Friday. Clocks will be used with 60 minutes +10 seconds per move per player each game.
PLEASE NOTE THE 9 AM START ON THE WEDNESDAY for the Under 18 and U16 Championship. IF POSSIBLE, BE THERE EARLY, SAY 8:30, on the Wednesday.
The sessions will all be finished by 4pm.

July Junior Tournament (under 11) – 15 mins each
The July Junior Tournament is for players aged 10 and under and is just great fun and all juniors are encouraged to have a try – you simply need to know how the pieces move and then you start learning ideas instantly. It starts at 9:30AM and finishes at 3PM daily.
Special one-day tournaments will be organised for those who can play for just one day.
Schedule: July Junior:
8 games daily: 9.30 am, 10.30 am, 11.00 am 11.30am and 1pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.00pm – 15 minutes per player for the whole game.
