Individual Tournaments

We had over 85 juniors competing in the 2022 October Junior events and a further 33 in the Girls Only events on the Tuesday – it was all very hectic and busy and great fun. The highlight though for the younger players was the visit by the team from the ABC’s Behind The News on the Thursday to record a chess event and the kids loved it! Jack Evans, one of the stars of the show played a whole crowd of kids at once despite not really knowing much about the rules but the chant of ‘Take the Rook!’ etc by 20 onlookers was hilarious.

The 2022 State Junior Championships took place over the last 4 days of the July holidays and there were lots of events contested- everything except the Under 11, 10, 9 and 8 Championships which will be held in the October holidays.

The standard of all the Championships was very impressive – many beautiful games and many well fought and thought – very few easy victories but many long battles often decided in the last minutes of the time control.

The State Junior Championship – the Under 18 –  was won very impressively by Max Pritchard with 6 points out of 7 games – he lost his last game to Tharan Balachander though by that stage he had already won the event. Second was Ethan Retnaraja and finishing equal third were Tharan Balachander and Timothy Gibbons.

The State Girls Championships were played on the Girls Only Day, which is held on the last Tuesday of each school holiday and is sponsored by the Evelyn Koshnitsky Trust.

The State Girls Under 18 Championship ended in a tie for first between Athena-Malar Retnaraja and Aishwarya Srikanth, 3rd: Dewmi Liyanage.

The State Under 16 Championship was another victory by Athena-Malar Retnaraja. Second was Danny Yang; third: Caleb Tang.

The State Under 15 Championship ended in a tie for first between Jamie Charters and Joshua Joshi; third: Andrew Xu.

The Under 14 Championship was won by Ilya Eimery; second was Gabriel Lavrentiadis; third: Anesh Saravanan.

The Under 13 Championship was won by Keshav Balachander; second was Charles Tang; third: Dewmi Liyanage

The Under 12 Championship was won by Manav Karthikeyan; second was Sharvi Kamble; third: Oliver Cirami.  And with about half the field being 10 or younger, some special prizes were awarded to these – however, the actual State Under 11 and younger Championships do not take place until October. Therefore, in the Under 11 section: Equal first Connor Caruso and Kavish Nagpal; equal third: Shlok Shah, Jude Errington and Pradyun Parikh.

The State Under 12 Girls Championship was a tie for first between Miroslava Baryshnikova and Cindy Chen; third: Charlotte Chen.

The July Junior consisted of 3 events over 3 days with the overall winner being the player who scored those most points from these events.

The Winner of the Wednesday Competition was Ashmit Dileesh, and 4 players finished equal second:  Hriday Vaghela, Joshua Sam, Abel Koottungal and Max Chen.

The Winner of the Thursday Competition was Abel Koottungal with in equal second: Joshua Sam, Nicky Wang and Ashmit Dileesh

The Winner of the Friday Competition was Ashmit Dileesh, with Nicky Wang second; third was Abel Kooungal.

When compiling the results over the 3 days, the overall results for the July Junior were:

Under 11 : 1st Ashmit Dileesh, 2nd Abel Koottungal, 3rd Joshua Sam

The 2022 City Of Adelaide Junior Championships

(Arbiter/Club : unregistered)

The 2022 City of Adelaide Championships took place between the 27th April and the 29th April 2022. The City of Adelaide Under 21 Championship was played at the Classical time-rate of 1 hour +10 sec increment and had 6 rounds, just 2 games a day. It ended in a win for Tharan Balachander, with Ethan Retnaraja finishing second and Alistair Maria third. A high quality tournament with many good games.

The City of Adelaide Under 15 Championship had 4 games per day (25 minutes each + 10 sec increment) and had 12 rounds. Again a very strong tournament with 20 players and it ended in a tie for first between Jamie Charters and Athena-Malar Retnaraja, with Lachlyn Vuong coming third. The Under 14 Section of the tournament was won by Jackson Chen, ahead of Keshav Balachander and third Isaac Schiavone.

The Under 12 Championship also had 4 games per day but with only 16 players, the pairing program could only calculate 11 rounds, which was pretty remarkable anyway. The winner was Manav Karthikeyan, ahead of Clynton Vuong, second, and Campbell Thompson third. The Under 11 Section was won by Oliver Cirami, ahead of Connor Caruso, second, and Quan Nam Tran third.

The City of Adelaide Under 10 Championship was decided by the winner of the most points over 3 separate tournaments, played on consecutive days. The players did not need to take part in all 3 events but a big majority did and the competition was fierce! The overall winner with the most points was Miroslava Baryshnikova who amassed 17 points, second was Anesh Saravanan with 16.5 and third Ashmit Dileesh with 15.5. The Under 9 section ended in a tie for first between Shlok Shah and Pradyun Parikh with Sharvi Kamble coming third. The Under 8 Section was won by Jude Errington, ahead of Hriday Vaghela and third Andrew Wang.

The complete scoretables are listed below – and you should be able to scroll to the right to see all the rounds if necessary. The first number in result for the round is either a 1 or 0 or 1/2 – a win, loss or draw and so Tharan for example in round 5 scored a win against opponent number 6. The way the tie break works is that BucT is the total score of the players’ opponents, while Buc1 is the mean of the opponents’ score.

Tournaments held in 2021

There were 6 tournaments held by the SAJCL during the 2021 Term 3 School holidays – two on the Girls Only Day and four over the following Wednesday through Friday. The October 60 event was for players Under 21 and had a slow time rate of 60 minutes + 30 second Increment and will be sent for both an ACF and FIDE rating. The October 25 tournament had a time rate of 25 minutes + 10 sec increment and was for juniors over 10 who wanted a quicker time rate. The Under 11/ 10 Championship had the same time limit while the Under 9/8/7 Championship involved 3 separate tournaments – one on each day – and the overall winner was the player who scored the most points.

The details of the Girls Tournaments will be posted here shortly but here are the cross tables for all the other events:

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Ethan on winning this very strong event with a perfect score. Jakob and Andreas were also very impressive.

2021 U21 Oct 25

This event was supposed to go for 12 rounds but because there were only 12 players this was impossible and so it ended up being a 9 round event with a quick Allegro on the last day to keep everyone amused. Yifan Yin was very impressive and led the whole way and lost only one game and that was to Anthony Commisso. Jamie Charters kept the pressure up the entire time, while Andrew Xu and Lachlyn Vuong tied for third. The winner of the Under 13 group was Joshua Joshi, second Oscar Ayres and third Isaac Schiavone.

Cross Table at round 9 (to read the table, the first digit each round is the result – 1 for win, 0 for loss, and the rest is the opponent’s number)

This was a fabulous event with the players battling it out over 3 days and playing 12 games. Keshav Balachander and Clynton Vuong tied for first and Clinton was awarded the Under 11 Championship title and Keshav the Under 10 Championship title. Equal second in the Under 11 were Amelia Cirami and Sophie Cerny, while second in the Under 10 was Dewmi Liyanage and third Connor Caruso. The awarding of prizes for mixed age events is always tricky but we went by different age groups.

2021 U9/U8/U7 Championships – Day 1

This event took place on Thursday 30th June 2021 and was attended by students who were already on holiday – the week before the normal public school holidays. It was great fun and congratulations to Lachlyn on winning 9/9 – the following table looks strange – just testing using a Mac version of Vega – but the the first number in the round results is the score and the subsequent, the number of the opponent eg Lachlyn in round scored 1 against no. 4

Update on the State Junior Championships taking place in the July School Holidays – Thursday 15th July 8:30pm.

Unfortunately, due to the announced Covid restrictions, only the State Junior Championships will continue on the Friday – the July Junior Tournament planned for Friday will be abandoned. We will therefore have only 3 events running tomorrow – the State Under 18/16, the State Under 15/14/13 and the State U12 Championships.

We have held two of the three July Junior events over the past two days and each time it has been completed successfully with about 30 students in each. Reducing the number of students at the Chess Centre on Friday by this number will make it much safer for everyone.

Here are the current standings of the various state Championships and the final standings for the two completed July Junior events:

State Under 18 Championship:

A big congratulations to George Bartley on winning this year’s State Junior Championship. Played over-the-board at the Chess Centre the numbers were naturally down since notices about the tournament were late in coming out as there was uncertainty about how the events  would actually take place. George played well to win the event without dropping a point.

1st George Bartley; 2nd Christiaan Viljoen.

State Under 16 Championship:

And congratulations on another strong performance by Ethan Retnaraja, only losing to George Bartley.

1st: Ethan Retnaraja, 2nd Ben Stevens.

Wednesday, 15th July, Thursday July 16th & Friday July 17th 2020

9:30 AM Start – lunch 12 noon, then 12:30-5:30pm

Played at the Chess Centre, 10 Ranelagh St Adelaide 5000

These are among South Australiaʼs most prestigious junior events. They are a brilliant way to improve at chess. The players use clocks and are encouraged to record their moves. Some very good prizes. The players’ ages are those at the 1st of January.

The Chess Centre will be open from 8.00am on all days to allow parents to drop off youngsters before work. We want to have 9 games in all these Championships and so will have 3 games each day.

Clocks will be used with 60 minutes +10 seconds per move per player each game. We will have one game in the morning 9:30 – 12 noon with a lunch break (pizzas) at 12 noon. Then 2 games starting at 12:30pm and 3pm with all games finished by 5:30pm, most finished by 5pm. The sessions will all be finished by 5:30pm

The City of Adelaide Junior

The SAJCL and SACA and others had many plans for tournaments in 2020 but unfortunately these are all in disarray due to the Corona virus and because of social distancing, the Chess Centre is closed for the foreseeable future. However chess players are resilient and so we plan to try to do as many chess events as possible through the Internet, and that means running the City Of Adelaide Junior Championships through the Internet using LiChess and the Inter-school Matches using LiChess and Chesskid.com.

Here are the details about the City of Adelaide Junior – Internet!!

2020 City of Adelaide Junior Internet Championships

Under 21 – Wednesday 22nd, 23rd & 24th APRIL 2020 10AM – 4:30PM

U12 & U10 – Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th April 2020  10AM – 3:30PM

The City of Adelaide is open to all players Under 21 – it has a long tradition! – but in 2020 will be played via the Internet. There are three tournaments: an Under 21 tournament as well as an Under 12 and an Under 10 tournament. The Under 21 will be run over 3 Days, while the Under 12 and Under 10 will run for just 2 days, the Thursday and Friday before Anzac Day. The playersʼ ages are those at the 1st of January.

We will be using a Program called Tornelo!!!!

We were recommending a website called LiChess.org and it is fabulous, but not really designed to run online tournaments. Students will need to go to tornelo.com and register for the tournament – it is easy – and instructions are available on the sajuniorchess.org website. They then simply logon to the website using the following links on the appropriate day.

And if life gets back to normal, some of the following events may take place over the board!

At the moment, it looks like chess may be the only sport played by schools this year!

Most junior events, like the State Junior Championships, are run in the second week of each of the school holidays,  and the players’ ages are determined by the simple rule – if the event is in the first half of the year – their age is that as of the 1st of January, otherwise, if the event is in the second half of the year, it is their age as of the 1st of July.

The events being run by SACA – the SA Chess Association, are held either over special long weekends or on Tuesday evenings – and while youngsters are encouraged to play in these events, they need to have either done some serious study or had coaching and know how to record their moves.

The SA Chess Association is subsidising any juniors taking part in their competitions by 50% – so they pay just half fees – fabulous!!

The October 60 Tournament

This event was severely depleted after just the two rounds on the first day but the final result was:

1st: Ethan Retnaraja, 2nd Hamish Pattison, 3rd Theran Balachander

The December 16 tournament

This was a small tournament run just on the 16th December

1st: Timothy Gibbons, 2nd Jackson Clark 3rd Elina Eimery, 4th Arshnoor Singh.

2019 Wrap-Up Tournament

This tournament was held on the second-to-last Friday of Fourth Term and we were delighted to see over 50 players take part. It was particularly pleasing to see the enthusiastic crowd from our new school and potential venue for next year Pennington PS, inspired by Julz Jansen and the new players from Immanuel College. And of course, a big thanks to Mitcham PS for such fabulous support.

It was also very pleasing to see that the top 3 places were taken by girls and congratulations to Elina and Dewmi for tying for first.

Congratulations to Anthony Huynh on winning the 2019 City of Adelaide Championship with a perfect score of 6 out of 6 games. We ended up having 32 players over the two days – a chess set!

The City of Adelaide Under 21: Winner: Anthony Huynh, Equal Second were Ethan Retnaraja and David Zhang on 5 points but Ethan was awarded second place on countback.

There were two other Age Sections for the Under 21 and it is quite complex trying to award the Age Prizes fairly, however, that said:

The Under 15 Section: 1st Ethan Liu; equal 2nd Raad Rahman, Jake Steele and Jordan Lewis.
The Under 13 Section: Equal 1st: Oliver Fenton and Alistair Maria; =3rd: Caleb Tang and Dimandiw Kosgallana.
