A big congratulations to George Bartley on winning this year’s State Junior Championship. Played over-the-board at the Chess Centre the numbers were naturally down since notices about the tournament were late in coming out as there was uncertainty about how the events would actually take place. George played well to win the event without dropping a point.
1st George Bartley; 2nd Christiaan Viljoen.
And congratulations on another strong performance by Ethan Retnaraja, only losing to George Bartley.
1st: Ethan Retnaraja, 2nd Ben Stevens.

These also took place in the October Holidays and were played alongside the Under 11-7 Championships – there were 6 games in the 60 minute/player competition and 9 games in the 25 minute/player comp.
Congratulations to the following players:
October 60: 1st Ethan Retnaraja, =2nd Tharan Balachander and Ethan Liu; =4th Ilya Eimery and David Zhang (11 players)
October 25: 1st Caleb Tang; =2nd Athena-Malar Retnaraja and Jackson Chen; =4th Anthony Commisso, Elliott Wadewitz; 6th Jayden Yue, =7th Srinivasan Santhosh, Isaac Connor, Rucha Parikh (22 players)
This was for players aged 10 and under and was played as 2 separate tournaments over 2 days and the results combined to work out the winner. It is NOT the State Under 11 Championship – that takes place next term – but is a great way for young juniors to meet future opponents and friends over the chess board.
1st: Leo Fuller with 13.5 points
2nd: Keshav Balachander with 12 points
3rd: Charles Tang: 11 points
=4th Lucas Chen and Max McMullen with 10.5
6th Oliver Cirami with 10
7th Dougal McLachlan with 9
8th Zachary Lee with 8.5
9th Pradyn Parikh with 8
10th Bryce Chen with 7.5

Played over the LAST Wednesday, Thursday & Friday of the school holidays
Wednesday, 15th July, Thursday July 16th & Friday July 17th 2020
9:30 AM Start – lunch 12 noon, then 12:30-5:30pm
Played at the Chess Centre, 10 Ranelagh St Adelaide 5000
These are among South Australiaʼs most prestigious junior events. They are a brilliant way to improve at chess. The players use clocks and are encouraged to record their moves. Some very good prizes. The players’ ages are those at the 1st of January.
The Chess Centre will be open from 8.00am on all days to allow parents to drop off youngsters before work. We will explore the possibility of players using the Internet to play their matches if there is a big enough demand for it. We want to have 9 games in all these Championships and so will have 3 games each day.
Clocks will be used with 60 minutes +10 seconds per move per player each game. We will have one game in the morning 9:30 – 12 noon with a lunch break (pizzas) at 12 noon. Then 2 games starting at 12:30pm and 3pm with all games finished by 5:30pm, most finished by 5pm. The sessions will all be finished by 5:30pm
Please note: These tournaments will only go ahead at the Chess Centre if there are no restrictions placed on them in SA. We will be following all the guidelines to try to ensure a Covid-Safe environment.

These are among South Australiaʼs most prestigious junior events. They are a brilliant way to improve at chess. The players use clocks and are encouraged to record their moves. Some very good prizes. The players’ ages are those at the 1st of January.

It starts at 9:30AM and finishes at 3PM daily. Special one-day tournaments will be organised for those who can play for just one day.

The City of Adelaide Junior
The SAJCL and SACA and others had many plans for tournaments in 2020 but unfortunately these are all in disarray due to the Corona virus and because of social distancing, the Chess Centre is closed for the foreseeable future. However chess players are resilient and so we plan to try to do as many chess events as possible through the Internet, and that means running the City Of Adelaide Junior Championships through the Internet using LiChess and the Inter-school Matches using LiChess and Chesskid.com.
Here are the details about the City of Adelaide Junior – Internet!!
Under 21 – Wednesday 22nd, 23rd & 24th APRIL 2020 10AM – 4:30PM
U12 & U10 – Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th April 2020 10AM – 3:30PM
The City of Adelaide is open to all players Under 21 – it has a long tradition! – but in 2020 will be played via the Internet. There are three tournaments: an Under 21 tournament as well as an Under 12 and an Under 10 tournament. The Under 21 will be run over 3 Days, while the Under 12 and Under 10 will run for just 2 days, the Thursday and Friday before Anzac Day. The playersʼ ages are those at the 1st of January.
We were recommending a website called LiChess.org and it is fabulous, but not really designed to run online tournaments. Students will need to go to tornelo.com and register for the tournament – it is easy – and instructions are available on the sajuniorchess.org website. They then simply logon to the website using the following links on the appropriate day.

Most junior events, like the State Junior Championships, are run in the second week of each of the school holidays, and the players’ ages are determined by the simple rule – if the event is in the first half of the year – their age is that as of the 1st of January, otherwise, if the event is in the second half of the year, it is their age as of the 1st of July.
The events being run by SACA – the SA Chess Association, are held either over special long weekends or on Tuesday evenings – and while youngsters are encouraged to play in these events, they need to have either done some serious study or had coaching and know how to record their moves.
The SA Chess Association is subsidising any juniors taking part in their competitions by 50% – so they pay just half fees – fabulous!!

The players who nominated for just one day or or could not turn up for the new final day were all considered to have just played a one-day tournament and in that case:
Equal first: Pink Fang and Ian Liu, 3rd Jackson Chen.
This tournament was also interrupted but had many of our best 11 year olds and older battling it out using a time limit of 25 minutes /game + 10sec increment.
Congratulations to 1st Lachlyn Vuong, 2nd Anthony Commisso and 3rd Caleb Tang.
Again, there were quite a few players missing and so they were treated as if they had played just a one-day tournament
One-Day October 25: Equal 1st Sebastian Lee and Yifan Wu; 3rd Oscar Welling.

This tournament was held on the second-to-last Friday of Fourth Term and we were delighted to see over 50 players take part. It was particularly pleasing to see the enthusiastic crowd from our new school and potential venue for next year Pennington PS, inspired by Julz Jansen and the new players from Immanuel College. And of course, a big thanks to Mitcham PS for such fabulous support.
It was also very pleasing to see that the top 3 places were taken by girls and congratulations to Elina and Dewmi for tying for first.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Preshaan Thavarajah on retaining his Under 18 State Junior Champion title for the third time – a mighty effort and almost a record! It was a very strong tournament and the competition fierce – it was played as a Round Robin.
Ethan Retnaraja also impressed, as always!, and won the Under 16 State Junior Champion Title.

Entry for a one-day event is $15.
Lunches will be around 12 noon and Pizza can be ordered each day for $5.
This was a fabulous event, boosted by many youngsters choosing to play up in a tournament with the longer time limit (25 mins +10 sec inc) rather than take part in the July Junior with the 15 minute time limit for each player. Jayden Yue was outright first in an impressive display but he had several scares against the younger brigade.
As is usual with this event, we award prizes for the best Under 11s in the event but this was not for the State U11 titles – that event takes place in the next holidays. But nonetheless, it was brilliant to see a hoard of very young players performing so brilliantly!

The July Tournament was played as two separate events and the scores of the players from both events were combined to produce the winners. Most players ended up playing 16 games over the 2 days. And although it was for 10 year olds and younger, this was NOT the State Under 11 Championship – that will be next holidays.
