Inter-School Competitions
The primary A Grade and Secondary Div 1 and Div 2 teams all have 5 players in each team, while the Primary B and C Grades and Secondary Div 3 only has 4 players per team.
Please note that the primary competitions at PAC will take place on Thursday afternoons, not Fridays, in Term 2 – 5th & 19th May and the 2nd and 16th June. This means that the Primary A Grade, and the primary B and C Competitions held there will take place on the Thursdays which may prove a benefit or a hindrance to some schools.
Also, we are delighted to have St Andrew’s again taking part in the competitions and their venue will be available on Thursdays, along with Grange PS this year.

Secondary – all played at the Chess Centre – 7 Friday nights – 4 nights in Term 2, 3 in term 3

Inter-school Chess in Term 3
This short series of matches over 4 Fridays has proven very popular – so much so that I thought quite a few of the competitions would end last week but I had so many requests to go for the full 4 weeks, that, apart from the Primary A Grade which we said finished last week, all the other grades and matches will continue with 2 games this Friday afternoon and night. This means that an extra round has been added to those 7 round competitions and this includes the Secondary Division 1 competition. The Walford C Grade Competition will end with 2 rounds of Matches between Concordia and Walford, and each player will play each other twice, with alternate colours.
So, a sincere apology if this inconveniences anyone but it was simply delightful to see the Chess Centre in particular last Friday night full of kids (within the safe Covid-19 limits) simply loving the game – huge excitement and laughter!

Therefore we plan to run a short 4-week series of inter-school matches at the Chess Centre, 10 Ranelagh St Adelaide, Prince Alfred College and Walford School through August:
Friday: 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th August 2020
If you know of another venue that can cope safely with 8 teams, please let us know ASAP.
There is a limit on the number of students permitted at these venues and so, to simplify matters we will limit the number of students at each to 96, and this means we will have a maximum of 24 teams of 4 players at each venue, split into 3 competitions of 8 teams. Each team will play the other 7 teams by playing 2 matches on the first 3 nights and a single match on the final night.
The Time limit for the primary matches will be 15 minutes per player per game – so each match will take at the most 30 minutes and the double matches one hour. The Secondary matches will have a time limit of 25 minutes each per player per game and so each matches could go for 50 minutes and those nights with 2 matches 1 hour 40 minutes.
The primary Matches will start at 4pm and the Secondary Matches at the Chess Centre at 7pm. The cost per team to take part in these matches will be just $40 for the entire series.

Chess and the Covid-19 Virus
As can be imagined, chess like everything else has been greatly affected by the Covid-19 and practically all the over-the-board competitions have stopped around the world. The Chess Centre has been closed for the foreseeable future.
The SAJCL Committee decided last week that this year’s inter-school matches will take place but through the use of the Internet.
Team Registrations
Internet Matches in 2020
Inter-school Matches will start a week later than normal on Friday 15th May 2020 but all will be played on 7 consecutive Fridays using the Internet in Term 2.
It is hoped that restrictions will have been lifted in Term 3 and some Finals or special tournaments can be run in the normal way – across-the-board.

Primary B Grade and Primary C Grade
All Primary Matches will start at 4pm and the Primary B and Primary C Grade players will use ChessKid.com
The students will be supplied with special logins to use.
There will be 4 players in the team.
The Primary B Grade and C Grade Matches will generally go for 1 hour, from 4 – 5pm – with all players playing their opponent twice, using the Fast Chess Time limit of 15 minutes per player.
The Primary A Grade (being played on chess.com) will go to 5:30pm using the time limit 45 minutes each per game.
The teams will be entered into special Clubs on ChessKid in groups of 8. So, as teams are registered, they will fill up the special Clubs we will create eg: Primary B1, then Primary B2 etc
As teams are registered for the event, special logins will be created for them to use for the matches and they will play 2 matches using the 15 mins/each player per game.
So if Linden Park wants to enter 5 teams for example, they simply need to send the following info:

We will create 4 or 5 chesskid accounts for each team using a system such as LP-B-Red-1, LP-B-Red-2 etc and advise the school that John Jones for example has the login LP-B-Red-1. So each student will have assigned to them a special sign-in for Chesskid when they come to play their match.
When the matches start, there will be a post telling the teams who they have to play, and so, for example:

And they will play 2 games, one with white and one with black. When they finish the first game, they simply re-match and they will play with the opposite colour.

Primary A and Secondary Div 1, 2 and 3
The Secondary Matches and Primary A Grade Competitions will be played using Chess.com
The Secondary Matches will all be played at 7pm but the Primary A will be played at 4pm.
The students need to register a name on chess.com but it is free and will only take a few minutes. Sincere apologies but I suggested using LiChess last term but have found the private forum we can use on chess.com will be easier for the students to play the Matches.
And it is here where players each week can find out who is their opponent and challenge for a game.
1. To do this, they need to have a chess.com account
2. When they have created their account they need to join the special club using the above link – it is a private club so they will need to apply to join – and we will let them in.
3. The school needs to let me know using an Excel spreadsheet or similar the teams of 5 players for the Secondary Division 1 or Division 2 or Primary A Grade or teams of 4 for Secondary Div 3 that they are entering in a format like this:

The Division 1 Matches will have just one game per night, each with 1 hour on the clock and a 10 second increment.
The Division 2 and Division 3 Matches will have 2 games, each with 25 minutes on the clock. When they finish the first game, they can play the second game, provided of course their second opponent is ready.
The Draws will be posted up on the Facebook Club page each week in either the Div 1, Div 2, Div 3 or Primary A Grade Forums and the players simply challenge their opponent using their chess.com name and play the game. There is a simple description on how to do it. The winner has to POST the result on the page so we know who has won.
The Matches will start on Friday 15th May 2020 WEEKLY around 7pm – there is a chat facility built-in to Chess.com so we can easily fix any hassles using that or the Zoom program

The Evelyn Koshnitsky Shield for Champion Primary School
The Evelyn Koshnitsky Shield is an Invitational event to the most active primary chess schools in the SAJCL competition to take part in a 3 round competition to work who has the right to hold the Champion Primary School shield for the year.
The competition was won by East Marden PS, ahead of PAC and North Adelaide PS. Congratulations to East Marden, who also won the Primary A Grade and they will represent SA in th Australian Schools Teams Championship in Sydney in January.
