2021 State Championships

Final Standings for 2021 State U18-U12 Championships

The 2021 State Junior Championships took place in the last week of the school holidays in July and were remarkable for several things:

We had the return of the State Under 18 Girls and State Under 12 Girls Championships for the first time in years, with more than 40 girls taking part – thanks to sponsorship by the Evelyn Koshnitsky Trust

We had over 100 students playing in the U18-U12 Championships and an extra 30 or so playing in the July Junior for players Under 10

We  saw Ethan Retnaraja easily win the Under 18 Open and his sister Athena-Malar similarly win the Girls U18 State Championship and also the State Under 14 Championship in decisive fashion

We were also made acutely aware of how lucky we have been in SA compared to states like Victoria and NSW when Covid restrictions meant we had to abandon the final tournament for the July Junior (it was intended to consist of 3 tournaments over 3 days) in order to keep the numbers in the Chess Centre within the safe limits.

A big thank you to all the helpers and parents over the 3 days.

The following tables will show you the final standings but to summarise:

The State Under 18 Championship: 1st Ethan Retnaraja, 2nd George Bartley, 3rd Raad Rahman

The State Under 18 Girls: 1st Athena-Malar Retnaraja, =2nd Rucha Parikh and Tina Ma – the result was determined by adding the scores of the two individual tournaments held on separate days.

The State Under 16 Championship: 1st Alistair Maria, 2nd Anthony Huynh, 3rd Callum Dundas

The State Under 15 Championship: 1st Tharan Balachander, 2nd Dimandiw Kosgallana, =3rd Andreas Chignola-Torres and Jun Tian Zheng

The State Under 14 Championship:  1st Athena-Malar Retnaraja, 2nd Lachlyn Vuong, =3rd William Carrigan & Andrew Xu

The State Under 13 Championship: 1st Ilya Eimery, 2ndJackson Chen, =3rd Angad Gill & Isaac Connor (these are new and the result updated – one of the results for the last round was entered incorrectly)

The State Under 12 Championship: 1st Manav Karthikeyan, 2nd Keshav Balachander, 3rd Amelia Cirami. This was a fabulous event with over 30 players in it and a special set of awards were given for the best Under 10s – the winner was Dewmi Liyanage, 2nd Nicky Wang and =3rd were Pradyun Parikh and Savija Rupasinghe

The State Under 12 Girls Championship: 1st Sophie Cerny, =2nd Dewmi Liyanage & Aishwarya Srikanth –  again, this was a fabulous event which consisted of 2 separate tournaments and the winners determined by the combined scores.
